You wouldn't have thought that little old OurCamden would have something to say about the Budget..... and maybe we shouldn't.....
... Except there is one bit that interests us... and that's the introduction of the Living Wage.
OurCamden has been very proud to be a Living Wage Employer from the very start. Although we are very small, we believe it is an important message to get out.
So when it was brought up in the budget, we were delighted. And, although there's a way to go before it gets properly introduced, reducing the need for working people to be paid a fair wage, it's definitely a start.
Here's the thoughts of Rhys Moore, Director of the Living Wage Foundation.
It's been a big week for the Living Wage movement in the UK.
On Wednesday the Chancellor announced the creation of a 'National Living Wage' - in effect a higher minimum wage for those over the age of 25. Let's be absolutely clear. We believe this is a welcome and positive development for millions of low paid workers. It represents a significant change in the way the minimum wage is calculated for over 25s. In sectors such as social care, hospitality and retail the change by 2020 could be transformative. Yes there are many questions outstanding after the budget. There are of course real concerns about the impact of changes to tax credits on the lives of working families. You can read our immediate response to the budget here.Today we want to thank you, the UK's 1,600 accredited Living Wage employers, for your continued leadership on the challenge of low pay in the UK. You are at the forefront of this debate and have successfully set the agenda for the Government. Having spoken to many of you over the last 48 hours we have been inspired by your sustained commitment to the cause and determination to keep leading the way. From all the team here, thank you.We will continue to work with you to build this extraordinary, diverse and powerful movement for change. We are meeting with the Government shortly and will feedback to you on the outcomes of our discussions. Our Principal Partner the Resolution Foundation has produced a very helpful briefing here on the budget changes. #LivingWage and #WeAreLivingWage
